Mother Moon Service Scholarship
Sadie "Mother" Moon lived in a large family in a small town in Iowa. She was not wealthy, but always found a way to help others. Ike Leighty was a neighbor of Sadie Moon. Sadie noticed that Ike did not have presentable shoes, so she told Ike that he would be doing her and her son a huge favor by breaking in a pair of her son's new shoes. In the true spirit of philanthropy, Sadie was able to help Ike by giving him much needed shoes. She did it with grace and elevated Ike's sence of dignity by making him feel as though he was helping her. Ike was not the only person Sadie Moon helped along the way. Many lives were shaped by her loving acts of kindness.
Jane Leighty Justis is Ike Leighty's daughter. The Leighty family are the originators of the Mother Moon Service Scholarship (MMSS). MMSS is located in three states: Iowa, Indiana, and Colorado. It was originally managed by the Leighty's as a family activity. The Justis children took applications/nominations from students from their high school in Manitou. As the children grew up and left home, Jane found a home for MMSS with the Children's Literacy Center.
This scholarship is given in honor of Sadie "Mother" Moon (1880-1956).
Why the scholarship? Ike Leighty, founder of The Leighty Foundation, sought ways to pass on Mother Moon's legacy of kindness. The Mother Moon Service Scholarship promotes community awareness among the youth of our community. Students are often recognized for athletics, academics, and extracurricular activities, but gifts of service often go unnoticed. This scholarship recognizes and rewards students who have offered their lives in service as Mother Moon had.
