Youth Council
The Children's Literacy Center youth council consists of high school students throughout the Pikes Peak region. The youth council members volunteer their time to the Children's Literacy Center fundraising events, community outreach, tutoring, and tutor recruitment. For further information please contact Sheri Kaufman at 471-8672.
What do Youth Council members do?
Tutor Recruitment
Pass along information about Children’s Literacy Center to peers and teachers and encourage them to tutor! Participate in the Tutor Challenge and win prizes for the most tutors recruited for Peak Reader sites.
Fundraisers
Because Children’s Literacy Center functions as a non-profit organization, we depend heavily on special events to raise money from the community. These events range from dinners and breakfasts at Garden of the Gods Club to parties at Phantom Canyon and events held at Mr. Bigg’s. Youth Council members play a pivotal roll in the success of our fundraisers by staffing the events.
Book Drives
Children’s Literacy Center passes along new and gently used books to our Peak Reader sites. Donated by generous people in the community, these books often end up in the hands of children who might not otherwise be able to have a book of their own. Over ¾ of these books donated to Children’s Literacy Center are generated by book drives run by Youth Council members.
Mother Moon Service Scholarship
Mother Moon Service Scholarship awards college money to seniors in high school who prove to be outstanding stewards of community service. Youth Council administers this scholarship by recruiting applicants, reviewing applications, conducting interviews, and ultimately choosing who receives the money.
